Random July

July was cooler than we would have liked  - too cool to get in an unheated pool! We made a few trips to the Morton Arboretum.

Exploring the secret stream. He LOVES this:

Taking advantage of an already-drawn hopscotch game:

Gavin did a week-long Tae Kwan Do camp, and on the last day they played mini-golf. I think he and his buddy DJ were more interested in climbing than golfing, but they had a great time:

Kane County Cougars

For Grandpa Cermak's work picnic this year, the company took everyone out the ballgame. It was one of the local minor league teams, the Kane County Cougars. It was nice and close!

Our friends Mark Maurer and his daughter Paige (who takes Tae Kwan Do with Gavin) were there, too.
The kids were somewhat interested in the game and the stadium...for being 6, I think they did just fine.

Update on Nana

Nana Cermak has been at DuPage Convalescent Center for the last three weeks, strengthening her new knee. She got to come home yesterday, and was happy to sleep in her own bed!

Here are some pictures from her last week at DPCC:

Francis stopped by on his birthday:

Nana is wearing a purple shawl she won at Bingo (she won a lot at Bingo during her stay)!

Nana got a LOT of flowers!

Gavin colored a picture for her:

Random Summer Fun

When Gavin and I aren't at Centennial Beach, we fill our afternoons with other fun stuff. Here are some random photos from the last month:

A park playdate with Claire and her brothers - Gavin is peeking out the top circle, Claire is in the middle, and her brother Ethan is at the lower one:

Centennial Park - it's huge and there's always lots of kids there!

Morton Arboretum - Gavin is big enough to wade into the streams:

This black marble ball never gets old:

Centennial Park again - on this visit, we ran into a kindergarten classmate:

Safety Town

Last week Gavin got to go to Naperville's super fun camp called Safety Town. It's one week, 90 minutes per day, open to kids entering Kindergarten and 1st grade. We made sure to sign up with his buddy, Claire.

They learned about 911, bus safety, animal safety, water safety, poison look-a-likes, railroad safety, to name a few.

Firefighters put out a fire that had theatrical smoke. Gavin loved the hose!

The kids got a tour of an ambulance:

On the last day, I got to come early and walk around with him while he showed me everything. Here are a bunch of random things inside the town:

He loved every day and I highly recommend it!

Nana in rehab

Nana has moved into DuPage Convalescent Center for her rehab. She gets an hour of PT and then an hour of OT each day. They also have bingo, and she has won two prizes so far!

Gavin likes to push her wheelchair when we visit.

One of the most interesting things about the center is the big bird cage that houses eleven birds (finches and doves). They are really active. We can easily sit there for an hour.

Nana got a new knee!

On June 11, Nana got a knee replacement. She was in the hospital for 5 days and is now in a rehab center. Here are some photos from when she was in the hospital:

Wearing her scarf with pockets, knitted by a friend! What a great idea!

Lisa the technical assistant. She was AWESOME!

We brought lots of games and puzzles when we visited:

Gavin figured out how to reattach the leg circulation cuff thingys when Nana got back in bed:

Later in the week, I'll post some of Nana's rehab pictures. She is doing well and has decent motion in her knee, but still needs to get a little stronger before going home.
