Bath Day for Gavin

Gavin had his first visit to the pediatrician on Monday, so on Sunday night Sharon and I gave him is first sponge bath at home. Amazingly, he slept though almost the whole thing!

Here's the little guy on his "bath sponge," ready to be bathed!

We diligently reviewed our baby bathing guide from our "Marvelous Multiples" class we took at Edwards Hospital over the summer and started with his eyes and head. There was a little bit of discharge on his right eye that we were puzzled by, but figured we'd just ask the doctor the next day.

He woke up for this part, bathing his back, but quickly fell back asleep. You can see that Sharon and I are still wearing our hospital bands, which we still need to keep on to access the NICU to see Evie.

I know it looks like he hates this part on his tummy, but he's actually still asleep!

Gavin's fingernails were getting long and he was starting to scratch himself. A nurse in the NICU advised that we try filing his nails instead of cutting them, because a lot of parents are afraid they'll cut the baby (with good reason). The filing worked great (and you can see that he's still passed out).

Here he is, all spic and span and ready to make a great first impression at the pediatrician's office! Of course, when we got the doctor's office the next day, the first thing he did after I undressed him so that the nurse could weigh him was to pee all over the examination table (sigh). He sure did make an impression.

The discharge from his right eye turned out to be pink eye, which we were surprised by because we couldn't figure out how he possibly could have gotten that. The pediatrician said that it can happen during birth (but he was a c-section?), but the fact that it showed up a week after his birth made sense (somewhat).

Other than the pink eye, he was fine, and is in the right percentile of a 38 week twin. His skin is a bit dry though and a little flakey, so we're giving him daily doses of Eucernine, which is what the nurses recommended. We don't have a humidifier attached to our furnace, but we're getting one installed next week.

We got a prescription for some droplets that we have to administer for a week, but his eye is already looking better after just two days. It's been a mess to clean out though, especially after he's been sleeping. He can barely open the eye and a warm rag needs to be applied to soften up the gunk. Poor little guy. He's so good with the eye drops though. I was terrified they'd sting and we'd have a cranky baby three times a day for a week, but they don't seem to bother him at all.
